The Issue
A major arbitration against an oil & gas company consisted of a pool of 1.6 million multilingual documents centering upon a Norwegian dispute. A significant amount of irrelevant documents in this pool needed to be culled before review to avoid the spiraling cost of reviewing non-responsive material. Due to Covid related restrictions, the document review element had to be undertaken both remotely and in a completely secure environment.
Our Approach
In combination with key word searches, Consilio was able to use sophisticated data analytics tools, including search terms, date range filters, and data analytics functionality including communication analysis, email extraction analysis, and language ID. Consilio provided English and Norwegian document review lawyers to review documents using our Secure Virtual Review (SVR) environment. We provided a review briefing document, shared by external counsel to manage the 17 categories identified by client as being material to the dispute.

The Result
Consilio reduced the document population from 1.63 million to 11,847 documents, a reduction of more than 99%.
First-level review and categorisation were completed in 507.5 hours, significantly reducing the time and cost of review while directing the right language content to appropriately qualified resources.
