Session 1 – “What’s Evolved In The Law Department Since Last Year?”

Session Description
At last year’s meeting, we talked about what was happening in law departments and with law department operations. As a follow-on, this year we will focus on how law departments have evolved over the past year. What is the current focus and future direction? Attendees will be asked to take part in a brief flash survey to set the stage for the two days. This session will serve as a foundational for the rest of the meeting.

Session 2 – “Disruption In The Industry”

Session Description
Last year, this session focused on innovation within legal operations. This year, we take that one step further. We will focus on disruptions in the industry – such as the use of non-traditional legal service providers, changes in the technology landscape and the new players we see emerging in these areas that will be disrupting the way legal departments manage their work and the manner in which legal operations executives can be at the forefront of leading their departments.

Session 3 – “Change Management”

Session Description
Regardless of their position, people and teams are affected by change. Law departments are no exception. This session focuses on how to manage the changes that affect law department personnel, whether that change is related to new technology, a change in business process or new people and or responsibilities. Learn tips from various disciplines, social sciences, operational change and information technology, from our change management expert. Panelists from various companies will also provide context on how they have managed change within their law departments.

At the last two year’s meeting we took a “behind the scenes” look at how leading law firms were establishing and managing pricing, profitability, and project management to align their pricing structures to the needs of clients. This year, we are taking the session “up” a level to engage Law Firm leadership in the dialogue of how they can help ensure legal outcomes for clients AND help the new reality of budgeting and rates and cost pressures that legal department operations executives have increased responsibility. This session will focus on how law departments and law firms can better align to provide value.

Session 5 – “Negotiation Tactics”

This workshop will use a series of group and individual exercises to help you develop effective negotiating tactics and strategies to foster a win-win outcome with your outside counsel. We will begin the session with an overview of best practices from a leading expert in negotiation.

Session 6 – “Promoting The Value Of The Law Department”

Regardless of the progress made by law departments and Legal Ops over the past decade, the law department is still often seen as a “cost center” or an impediment to doing business. How can you enhance the reputation of the law department within the organization? This session discusses how to show the strategic role the law department plays in helping the company achieve its strategic objectives. It provides tools and tips to demonstrate the value the law department provides. We will also look at branding campaigns that your peers have used to gain visibility for their departments.
